New Website Checklist: A Simple Guide to Starting a Website

Gone are the days that you need to hire the expertise of a web designer or developer to create a website. With websites like WordPress, creating a website has never been easier, you can easily create your own website in a matter of minutes. Below is a basic checklist to get you started on your new website.

Step 1: Register a Domain Name

Your domain is simply what your website address is e.g. www.mydomainname.com. There are many tools online that help you search through domain name availabilities and provide alternates if your desired name is already taken. In every case you should aim to get the .com version of your domain but if this in unavailable the .net would be a suitable alternative.

Tip: Try keeping your domain name simple and easy to remember, you should aim to have a keyword in the domain name referring to what it is you do i.e. nancyscleaning.com, outbackmowing.com, twlightvintagecollectors.com.

Step 2: Find a Reliable Web Host

The next step is deciding where your website will be hosted. Although this doesn’t’ need to be a first priority it should remain front of mind when creating your new website. There are many web hosts out there to choose from. There are 3 main types of hosting shared, VPS and dedicated. Shared hosting is a good place to start with your new website as it’s the most easiest and affordable hosting available. If you decide you later need to move up to a VPS or dedicated hosting this can be easily upgraded by your host.

Tip: To minimise downtime, go with a web host that offers at least a 99.9% uptime guarantee. Any less can result in your website being unavailable for days during a year.
